Noah sends the raven out first — before the dove, before any sign of dry ground — and in Radical Trust the raven has kept score the whole crossing: seven pairs of every clean animal, and only two ravens. When the cage door opens he goes without a backward glance, and though he returns again and again to perch just outside the open window, he never once comes back in, not even to the mate waiting for him on the perch. The Raven’s Song puts words to the grievance he’s been rehearsing since the flood began: fed every day, kept alive the whole crossing, and still convinced that being sent out first proves he was never valued at all — Jesus’ words in Luke 12:24 turned into a joke the raven refuses to get. "Consider the ravens… God feeds them." The Talmud tells this same story of the raven’s protest at being sent out1; Radical Trust just lets him keep talking a little longer.
